Discovery Education has expanded its digital product suite and its UK presence by acquiring digital platform DoodleLearning.

The digital learning giant’s latest addition is designed to complement a host of other acquisitions, including its purchase of interactive learning platform Spiral in July 2020, and Mystery Science four months later.

“This acquisition is an important milestone,” said Discovery Education’s CEO Scott Kinney.

“[Discovery Education] is dedicated to creating a best-in-class edtech ecosystem that supports our mission to prepare today’s students for future success,” he continued.

DoodleLearning, which is based in Bath, UK, gives Discovery Education a key look into the UK market, whilst supercharging its maths and English offerings with the UK company’s personalised learning experiences that “help improve students’ academic achievement and confidence”.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed to the media.

“Our team will naturally fit into Discovery Education’s mission-driven culture, and we look forward to working with our new colleagues on our joint mission,” said DoodleLearning’s CEO and co-founder Nicola Chilman.

COO and DoodleLearning’s other co-founder, Tom Minor, said that there is “excitement” at the prospect of joining forces with Discovery Education.

“This acquisition is an important milestone”

“The company has laid out exciting plans to increase the number of instructional minutes it supports each day, and DoodleLearning is poised to play a significant role in this effort,” Minor commented.

DoodleLearning will complement Discovery Education’s other services, including its STEM Connect platform, its K-12 platform and its Espresso and Coding platforms.

The company has served over one million children aged 4 to 14 to date in the UK and abroad, with four products on offer “supporting instruction” in maths and English.

With experience in teaching maths, both Minor and Chilman created DoodleLearning originally as an app in 2011, combining digital content and educational support that “encouraged children to learn in an engaging” way.

The announcement says DoodleLearning will “continue to apply its educational ability to building and deploying affordable learning solutions”, promising a worldwide reach with the help Discovery Education’s global experience.

The company’s newest acquisition comes seven months after the launch of its Sandbox augmented reality app.

“We look forward to both partnering with the talented DoodleLearning team and scaling the reach of their innovative, adaptive maths and English products,” said Kinney.

Chilman added, “The entire DoodleLearning team is excited to join Discovery Education’s efforts to build and scale a powerful edtech ecosystem of digital resources serving teachers and learners worldwide.”
