Pearson PTE is a non-SDS stream in Canada

Published 25/11/2020

The Pearson’s PTE Academic exam is recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada as a Secure English Language Test that can be used for the country’s regular study permit application stream.

Separately, the testing provider has also announced it has launched SELTs in Nigeria for individuals wishing to work, study or come to live in the UK.

Also known as non-Study Direct Stream, the Canadian application stream tends to be used by international students who are not eligible for the expedited Student Direct Stream.

“Test takers have a choice of more than 30 PTE centres currently open in India”

Announced in 2018, the SDS stream can accept both IELTS Academic and IELTS General test scores the High Commission of Canada in India reminded, while only IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic test scores can be accepted for the non-SDS stream.

“Indian students can take advantage of the fact PTE Academic is one of the mandatory English language tests accepted by Canada for its regular study permit application stream, also known as non-Study Direct Stream,” Marlene Olsavsky, managing director for Pearson Canada said.

“Test takers have a choice of more than 30 PTE centres currently open in India, including in Punjab, Gujarat and Hyderabad, all with required health and safety measures in place,” she added.

Over 2020, a further 46 organisations have recognised PTE Academic in Canada – bringing its the total number of education establishments accepting the test in the country to 194.

Around 90% of Canadian public universities now accept the test, Pearson noted.

“PTE is a seamless experience for students from start to finish, from being able to book a test slot online and year-round, through to only having to wait up to 48 hours on average to receive results,” Olsavsky explained.

“Once they get their PTE score, students are then able to send it to any number of universities they are interested in, unlike other English tests which limit the amount of institutions where a score can be sent.”

PTE Academic is available in over 80 countries, and it is en route to reaching 100 countries by the end of 2020. More than 85% of test takers receive their results in less than two days.

Speaking on the PTE SELT in Nigeria, SVP for English Assessment, Freya Thomas Monk said the test will help many Nigerians broaden their horizons and apply for opportunities in the UK.

“The process is simple and brilliantly designed, interactive and most importantly a true reflection of one’s language ability,” she said. “We look forward to growing on the continent.”
