The British Council has recognised high achieving Malaysian-UK alumni for their professional contributions and outstanding achievements as business leaders, entrepreneurs and community leaders at its annual Study UK Alumni Awards 2020.

Held for the third year in Malaysia, the international award celebrates UK higher education and the achievements of UK alumni in Malaysia, further strengthening collaborative ties between the UK and Malaysia.

“We hope that their achievements will inspire the next generation of students”

In 2019, the awards received around 1,000 applications from international UK alumni in more than 100 countries, representing over 120 higher education institutions across the UK.

Three winners were honoured out of seven finalists based on their impact, UK influence, media traction, potential to influence and inspire the next generation of potential students, as well as the quality of the application.

The winner of the Professional Achievement Award went to Oon Chern Ein, while Howe Wong and Goh Ai Ching received the awards for Social Impact, and the Entrepreneurial Awards respectively.

Sarah Deverall, director Malaysia, British Council said the three winners and all seven finalists have maximised their UK education experience and made a significant impact on their communities.

“The Alumni Awards allow us to come together to celebrate these individuals and the role of international students in enabling the UK to be one of the most diverse, dynamic, and rewarding higher education destinations,” she added.

When asked how much of an impact a UK education had for students, Deverall explained that through a holistic education experience, students who study in the UK not only excel academically but are also better prepared for the workforce and more well-rounded as individuals.

“The Alumni Awards provide an opportunity for us to recognise their achievements,” she said.

“We are immensely proud to be catalysts for their success, and hope that their achievements will inspire the next generation of students.”

The award-winning alumni will share their experiences and expertise at British Council’s bi-annual Study UK Fair on March 22 in Kuala Lumpur.
