Aus: QLD triples student support to $15m

The Queensland government has more than tripled its support for students, boosting its state-wide international education assistance and recovery package to AUD$15 million.
As part of this package, an additional $10 million will now be made available to support international students experiencing severe financial hardship as a result of Covid-19.

Posting on its website, Study Queensland said that it recognises that “many international students have lost their income and are feeling a heightened sense of anxiety being away from family during the pandemic, with many unable to travel home”.
“The new funding complements a range of relief programs already introduced by the Queensland government, universities, education and training providers and local communities to support students during this difficult time.”

In the meantime, Study Queensland said international students needing immediate crisis support should reach out to their education and training provider or the Queensland Student Hub network.
The Hub – an online platform providing free student support services to students across the state – was first announced by the Queensland government in April, as well as $2.2 million in funding for counselling, tuition support, laptops, isolation care-packs, pre-prepared meals and other living expense payments to students.
The latest announcement comes just days after the New South Wales government announced it will fund temporary crisis accommodation for international students who are facing hardship due to Covid-19. The $20m relief package will include a temporary housing scheme and student support services.
“Every Australian state and territory has now heard the call to step up and support international students,” said Universities Australia chief executive, Catriona Jackson.
