An operator of private schools in China, Maple Leaf Education, has opened a high school at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, making it the company’s third school on a university campus in Canada.

The firm also has schools in Thompson Rivers University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and since opening Maple Leaf School – LakeheadU in September, it has enrolled 33 Chinese students in its first cohort.

“Our schools… encourage students’ personal development through our Global Leaders of Tomorrow program”

“[The students are] focused on high school graduation, but with that opportunity to be able to be on a university campus,” David Barnett interim provost and vice president of academics at Lakehead told CBC.

According to Maple Leaf, the model provides the students, in grades 10,11 and 12, a taste of university life in Canada.

“Our unique ‘university school’ model gives students the advantage of a small and personalised private high school education along with the independence and advanced academic, cultural and recreational opportunities available through our university partners,” Dawn Sutherland, president of Maple Leaf Education North America said when the company signed a MOU with in Lakehead in 2018.

“Our schools provide a Complete Care model and encourage students’ personal development through our Global Leaders of Tomorrow program.”

The school’s principal Monica Andrews noted that Maple Leaf School – LakeheadU’s “mission is to blend the best educational practices of both Canada and the world by offering a high-quality educational program”.

“Our students are provided with a comprehensive academic and social grounding that prepares them to take their place in an increasingly sophisticated, interconnected and competitive world,” a statement on the school’s website explained.
