NSW awards showcase int’l achievement

Three international students from China, Vietnam and the Maldives have won the top awards at Australia’s NSW Department of Education International Student Awards – designed to toast international students contributing to NSW government schools.

Winner of the school service award, Tran was described as a “prodigious fundraiser”

The winners, Andrea Zhao, Fathimath Aina Ibrahim and Henry Tran, beat a field of nominations from 10 countries and over 40 schools throughout NSW to be recognised for their achievements in academia, leadership and school service.

Zhao received the academic achievement award for receiving the highest Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank – a score used for entry into university – for an international student in the state, securing 99.9 out of a maximum 99.95.

A strong year for NSW’s high school sector, a record eight international students received an ATAR above 99 in 2018, according to the NSW Department of Education.

Winner of the school service award, Tran was described as a “prodigious fundraiser”, raising funds and volunteering for charities including White Ribbon Day to end male violence against women and girls, the World Greatest Shave, Butterfly Badge week for deaf awareness, and mental health awareness Kindness Week.

His work supporting fellow international students at his school was also recognised.

Described as an excellent leader and ambassador for her school, Ibrahim received the school service award for her work mentoring students and volunteering for school and community events, as well as being elected as a school captain.

NSW’s school sector attracted 24% of total Australian enrolments in 2018, and according to NSW DEI, more than 770 international students graduated from a government school, with 190 recognised on the distinguished achievers list.
