CBIE concludes successful Chile mission

Published 19/12/2018

A recent CBIE mission in Chile paved the way for closer collaboration between post-secondary institutions in the two countries and saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between two universities.

It was a “successful week,” and CBIE director of international partnerships Karen Dalkie told The PIE News that the mission has provided “invaluable” insights and forged relationships that will allow members to explore ways to work with Chilean institutions in their areas of interest.

“The direct insight gained into the Chilean context…will be invaluable to solidifying agreements”

“Members of the Canadian delegation to Chile had diverse interests, from student and staff mobility to research collaboration. The direct insight gained into the Chilean context and the relationships formed will be invaluable to solidifying agreements between individual institutions,” she said.

“CBIE will continue to foster collaboration with Chile and the Americas more broadly through future missions, as a founding member of the Conference of the Americas on International Education, and as administrator of Global Affairs Canada’s Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program.”

The mission was organised in cooperation with the Council of Rectors of Chilean UniversitiesLearnChile and the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education.

On the first day, an MoU was signed between the Université de Moncton and the Universidad de Los Lagos, an agreement that had been previously forged during another mission funded by Global Affairs Canada as part of the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program.

A total of eight CBIE members, both Anglophone and Francophone, participated in the mission, which spanned over five days and covered three cities.

Members had meetings with Chilean government officials and were supported by the Canadian Embassy in Chile, with the academic affairs coordinator at the Canadian Embassy in Chile joining the delegation on the third day of the mission.

CBIE’s next mission will take members to the Philippines in March 2019.
