English UK team completes Three Peaks challenge

Over £16,000 was raised for the Eddie Byers scholarship fund by an elite English UK team who volunteered to walk up the three highest peaks in the UK within 24 hours in a bid to raise money for the cause.

Susan Young at English UK said that staff were now turning their attention to getting the scholarship up and running, after recovering from the expedition.

A core group completed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon between early evening on Friday and bedtime on Saturday, walking 26 miles, with 2,926 metres of climb, and driving around 462 miles, mostly through the night.

Others, including Sam Byers, Eddie’s wife, joined the team for one mountain. She climbed Ben Nevis, producing a bottle of Glenmorangie and glasses from her rucksack at the summit to toast his memory.

The Eddie Byers Scholarship Fund reached its target of £15,000 as the team neared the summit of Ben Nevis, but is still taking donations.

Jodie Gray, who organised the challenge, commented: “It was a challenge for everyone who took part, whether they did one mountain or three, but we all worked together to make it happen.

“We’ve all got a fantastic sense of achievement now, and our next job is to get the scholarship up and running.”

Eddie Byers was the former Chief Executive of English UK who passed away in late 2015 – he was passionate about the transformative value of education and a scholarship scheme, which will now honour his memory.
