Spotlight on… Maynooth University
- Tell us about your university and its role within Ireland’s higher education landscape.
Maynooth University is one of Ireland’s fastest-growing universities, known for its strong emphasis on research, innovation, and student experience. Located just outside Dublin, it is part of the National University of Ireland system and has earned a reputation for academic excellence in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, as well as in cutting-edge areas such as data science and climate research.
Maynooth plays a significant role within Ireland’s higher education landscape by combining a tradition of scholarship with a modern, inclusive approach that attracts students from across Ireland and abroad. Its close partnerships with industry, government, and international institutions ensure that it contributes both to national development and to Ireland’s global reputation for high-quality education. - What sets your university apart from others?
What sets Maynooth University apart is its unique combination of tradition and innovation. As Ireland’s youngest traditional university, yet with historic roots dating back over 200 years, it offers students the intimacy of a smaller campus community while maintaining a global outlook and research excellence.
Maynooth is consistently recognised for its welcoming and inclusive culture, where students benefit from close engagement with lecturers and a supportive learning environment. Its distinctive liberal academic structure allows students to shape their degree pathways with flexibility, fostering critical thinking and interdisciplinary skills.
In addition, the university’s vibrant campus life, strong industry links, and international partnerships create opportunities that distinguish Maynooth as a place where students are prepared not only for careers, but also to make meaningful contributions to society - What makes Ireland such an attractive destination for international students?
Ireland is an increasingly attractive destination for international students because of its world-class education system, welcoming culture, and vibrant economy. Irish universities are globally recognised for excellence in research and teaching, particularly in areas such as technology, business, and the humanities.
As the only official English-speaking country in the EU, Ireland offers students the advantage of studying in a globally connected language environment while also experiencing a rich cultural heritage. Beyond academics, Ireland is home to many leading multinational companies, providing excellent opportunities for internships and career development.
Combined with its friendly communities, safe environment, and stunning landscapes, Ireland offers international students a unique and rewarding study abroad experience. - How do you see the Irish higher education sector evolving over the next five years?
Over the next five years, Ireland’s higher education sector is likely to become even more globally connected, innovative, and responsive to societal needs. With increasing investment in research and digital transformation, universities will expand their capacity in areas such as sustainability, data and AI, and health sciences.
A continued emphasis on internationalisation will attract more students and researchers from around the world, strengthening Ireland’s role as a hub of knowledge and innovation within Europe. At the same time, institutions will focus on widening access and enhancing student supports to ensure inclusivity and equity remain central to the sector’s growth.
Overall, Irish higher education will play a vital role in driving economic development and preparing graduates to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. - Are there particular markets or student segments you’re looking to grow in the near future?
Maynooth University is committed to growing its international student community by strengthening engagement in key global markets. In the near future, the university is particularly focused on expanding its reach in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, building on strong academic partnerships and alumni connections in these regions.
There is also an emphasis on attracting postgraduate and research students, especially in areas aligned with Maynooth’s strengths such as data science, climate and sustainability, social innovation, and the School of Medicine and Nursing. At the same time, the university is working to diversify its student body by welcoming more students from underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring that Maynooth remains an inclusive and globally connected campus. - Outside of work, what’s one thing a visitor to Ireland shouldn’t miss?
Outside of work, one thing a visitor to Ireland shouldn’t miss is experiencing its natural beauty and cultural heritage firsthand. Whether it’s exploring the Wild Atlantic Way with its dramatic coastal landscapes, visiting the Cliffs of Moher, or immersing yourself in the lively atmosphere of traditional music in a local pub, Ireland offers something memorable for every visitor.
The blend of breathtaking scenery, rich history, and the famously warm Irish welcome makes these experiences truly unique and unforgettable. - What attracted you to take part in The PIE Live Ireland?
I was attracted to take part in The PIE Live Ireland because it brings together a dynamic mix of global education professionals, thought leaders, and institutions to share insights and best practices. It’s a valuable opportunity to showcase Maynooth University’s strengths on an international stage, while also learning from colleagues across the sector about emerging trends and challenges.
I was particularly drawn to the collaborative spirit of the event, which aligns with Ireland’s reputation for being a welcoming and innovative hub for education. Engaging in these conversations not only helps strengthen global partnerships but also ensures we are continuously improving the experience we offer to international students. - Which sessions on the agenda are you most looking forward to attending, and why?
I am most looking forward to discussions on industry alignment and the role of students as a talent pipeline. As global education increasingly connects with workforce needs, exploring how universities can prepare graduates with the right skills, experiences, and pathways to industry is essential.
This focus will be especially valuable in understanding how Maynooth University can strengthen partnerships with employers and ensure our students are ready to contribute meaningfully in a rapidly changing world.

What’s a typical day like for you at your institution?
A typical day as VP international is dynamic and varied, reflecting the global nature of the role. My mornings often begin with meetings with international partners or colleagues across different time zones, focusing on collaborations, TNE, student mobility, or research opportunities.
The rest of the day is usually a mix of strategic planning sessions with university leadership, engaging with faculty on international initiatives, and supporting teams working on student recruitment, partnerships, and global engagement.
I also make time to connect with international students on campus, as their experiences are at the heart of our mission. No two days are ever the same, but all are driven by the goal of strengthening Maynooth University’s role as a globally connected institution.
