NISAU founder appointed to London Met’s board of governors
In this role, the NISAU UK founder has become the youngest independent governor on the London Metropolitan University board and one of the few young civil society leaders from the Indian diaspora to hold such a position within UK higher education governance bodies.
Reflecting on her appointment, Arora said: “London Met’s values – of equity, opportunity, and transformation – resonate deeply with me.”
“As someone who has worked closely with students from all walks of life, I know what it means to be given a chance. I’m honoured to support this wonderful university.”
For its part, London Met believes that Arora’s extensive experience in promoting its core values of fairness, inclusivity, and transformation will provide important impetus for its development.

Sanam Arora, NISAU UK
As the founder of NISAU — the UK’s peak body representing Indian-origin students and alumni — Arora has been instrumental in influencing UK international education policy. Most notably, she led the successful campaign to reinstate the UK Graduate Route visa, a policy change now benefiting hundreds of thousands of students and higher education institutions across the country.
In addition to her work at NISAU, Arora serves as a commissioner on the UK’s International Higher Education Commission, where she helps shape the nation’s future international education strategy. She also works on major initiatives such as the India UK Education Conference and the Achievers Honours, both delivered in partnership with the UK government.
Beyond the education sector, Arora brings over a decade of corporate finance experience, having advised some of the world’s largest investment houses. Her expertise in regulatory, strategic, and consumer protection issues will further strengthen London Met’s financial resilience and governance.
Arora is a graduate of the London School of Economics, where she studied operational research and was awarded the Union’s highest honour — the Honorary Studentship.
Her contributions to higher education have been widely recognised: in 2023, she was named one of the 50 Most Influential Voices in Global Education by The PIE, and has also received the PIEoneer Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Higher Education Industry.
Tijs Broeke, chair of London Metropolitan University’s board of governors, welcomed the appointment.
“Sanam brings a wealth of experience that aligns perfectly with London Met’s mission. Her leadership and advocacy for international students complements our ambition to be a truly global and welcoming university,” he said. “I look forward to working with her to advance our strategic priorities and strengthen our support for students.”
