IIT Bombay to establish international centre in Japan
IIT Bombay is set to open its first international centre in Japan in partnership with Tohoku University next year.
The centre will initially focus on offering joint PhD programmes as the first phase rolls out, followed by MTech courses, according to a statement by IIT Bombay.
A statement by the institute said that on April 15 the institutions had officially signed a joint statement on establishing the Tohoku University–IIT Bombay Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE).
“This collaboration aims to advance academic and research excellence, foster industry-academia co-creation and promote a wide range of collaborative initiatives,” it said.
The partnership, which will focus on collaborative research and facilitate student and faculty exchanges, will also promote innovation in key areas of mutual interest, including sustainable energy, artificial intelligence, materials science, disaster resilience, and more.
Moreover, this will be the first-ever overseas centre established by IIT Bombay.
In comparison, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras have already launched their international campuses in Abu Dhabi and Zanzibar, respectively.

The partnership between IIT Bombay and Tohoku University will also play a key role in strengthening the growing academic and research ties between India and Japan, with a strong emphasis on student mobility.
In order to attract more students and international talent from India, Japan’s education ministry and the University of Tokyo came together to extend financial assistance to about 270 graduate students, while also increasing recruitment operations in the South Asian nation.
According to government data, 1,302 Indian students pursued higher education in Japan in 2022. This marked a recovery from the pandemic-related dip, following 1,761 students in 2019, 552 in 2020, and 193 in 2021.
In contrast, fewer than 800 Japanese students are pursuing studies in India, including short-term courses.
Indian students play a key role in Japan’s internationalisation strategy, which has an ambitious target to attract 400,000 international students by 2033, while also aiming to send half a million Japanese students abroad.
