IIE’s Allan Goodman wins Lifetime Impact Award

His win was announced earlier this month in Chicago at The PIE Live North America, recognising his exceptional dedication and contributions to the international education sector through student mobility and policy.

“[Allan Goodman] has been a defining force in shaping the landscape of international education in the United States for more than a quarter of a century,” said Ken LaOrden, CEO and co-founder of Quallege, as he presented the award.

“He has also helped IIE to build partnerships across continents, strengthening programs that support student mobility, academic freedom, and institutional collaboration.”

IIE, founded in 1919, is a not-for-profit private organisation facilitating international exchanges through international education programs and research for students, scholars, and artists worldwide.

The organisation serves as a key research and policy voice through its stewardship of the Open Doors report, which contains highly anticipated data on international student flows to and from the US.

With Goodman leading IIE, the Scholar Rescue Fund was also launched, which provides life-saving fellowships and academic placements to scholars facing threats to their lives and work around the world.

His visionary work has driven IIE to “build partnerships across continents, strengthening programs that support student mobility, academic freedom, and institutional collaboration”.

Although Goodman was unable to attend the awards in person, his colleague Sylvia Jons, director of the IIE Center for International Partnerships, accepted the award on his behalf.

“It’s been my privilege to serve as the sixth president of IIE, and during a period that included five pandemics, four different administrations, three wars and one recession,” said Goodman in his acceptance speech.

Under his leadership, IIE was able to navigate the international education sector through these challenging times, as well as to “push it to even greater heights”.

“When people ask me these days to name my favourite project or thing I’m most proud of doing, I say that it was to have the privilege of leading a terrific and very professional and dedicated global staff through both so many challenges and opportunities.

“And in January, IIE will release a new report in our series, ‘Outlook 2030’. It forecasts international enrolment trends between now and the end of the decade. In the next five years, we will see more internationally mobile students than ever in history,” Goodman added.

“As professionals, we already know what accommodating these students and their tremendous growth requires.”
