GEMS plans new international school in Cyprus

GSM, the advisory arm of GEMS Education, has announced plans to explore the establishment of a new international school in Limassol, Cyprus, in partnership with regional real estate development firm, CoolSide Development.

Set to open in 2027, the school will offer the British Curriculum for students aged 4-14 in its first year, before adding a new grade each year until it reaches a full FS1-Year 13 pathway for ages 4–18.

The school is designed to accommodate approximately 1,600 students and is expected to generate more than 100 jobs across teaching, leadership, and administrative roles.

The collaboration is non-binding and carries no legal or financial obligations for either party but the organisations say the plans currently reflects a “shared commitment” to bring “outstanding education to new markets”.

Under the non-binding agreement, CoolSide will hold the majority stake, while GSM will provide full operational leadership, management expertise, and access to its global education platform.

Located in Limassol’s rapidly growing eastern district of Pyrgos and facing the sea, the new school will serve the city’s “quickly expanding community of local and expatriate families seeking premium education,” GMS said in a statement.

“This partnership marks an important step in GSM’s growth strategy. Cyprus offers a compelling opportunity, a stable economy, a vibrant expatriate community, and a clear demand for quality schooling,” said Robert Tarn, managing director of GSM.

GSM offers a comprehensive “school-in-a-box” solution that includes school design, curriculum planning, recruitment, training, technology integration, safeguarding, and operational systems. It is a part of GEMS Education, a leading private K-12 education provider that was established in 1959 by founder and chairman Sunny Varkey.

Maxim Nazimok, group managing director at CoolSide, said that the real estate development firm is “delighted” to explore the collaboration with GSM.

“This project reflects our shared commitment to excellence and our vision to deliver prime location developments that enrich communities and create lasting value,” he said.
