British-based group Wellington College International has announced that it will open new schools in India, with the first to open in 2023.

The school group, which is a subsidiary of Wellington College boarding school in Berkshire, partnered with India’s Unison Group, first to open a campus teaching an English national curriculum in Pune, Maharastra.

Wellington College International Pune will begin operation in 2023 as a co-educational day and boarding school from the ages of two to 18.

Students will study for the IB Diploma, which is also the syllabus adopted at Wellington College.

WCI adds the proposed school in Pune to the six other schools on its roster, including locations in China and Thailand.

The master of Wellington College, James Dahl, said the school was “utterly thrilled” that the next chapter is a partnership with Unison Group.

“From our very first meetings, it was clear that the values and educational philosophy of both organisations were aligned,” Dahl said.

The education foundation, which has its headquarters in Uttarakhand, has ample experience in the sector; it runs the Unison World School in Dehradun – one of the top three residential girls’ schools in the country.

Unison’s co-founder Anuj Aggarwal said, “We are incredibly excited to be part of the Wellington College family.

“We see this as a wonderful opportunity for the students in India to attain a Wellington College education in their home country, and go on to access the top universities of the world.”

WCI’s international director Scott Bryan also expressed his delight with the partnership.

“WCI looks forward to working with Unison to combine the best of British and Indian education, establishing outstanding schools which are distinctively Wellington,” he said.

Pune, where the campus will be situated, is home to many universities and already welcomes the most international students of any city across India.

“Pune is such a dynamic and forward-thinking city and we can think of no better location for us to continue our mission of pioneering education,” Dahl added.

Bryan also commented that WCI looks forward to “providing excellent outcomes and opportunities for all students”, which also stretches to offering “unparalleled” excellence in sports, music and the arts.

Other schools, including a full boarding school, are also in the works as part of the agreement.
