Expo 2020 Dubai will be the setting for a series of events centred on the future of learning hosted by the UK Department for International Trade, as the bumper six-month exhibition continues.

‘How will we Learn?’, which takes place in the UK Pavilion at the event in the UAE, runs from Sunday December 5 to Saturday December 11.

Industry leaders and academics are taking part in the week to “explore how the education sector is developing the tools and approaches to to deliver high quality and lifelong learning for everyone”.

One of the highlights of the week takes place on December 11, where panellists will discuss the future of higher education.

Sir Steve Smith, the UK government’s international education champion will chair the panel discussing trends and future in HE, including online learning, micro-credentials, and the “future global student mobility”, as well as TNE.

“I am delighted to be attending the UK at Expo 2020 Dubai’s ‘In the Future… How Will We Learn?’ events in the UAE, which follows two previous successful visits to Saudi Arabia earlier this year,” Smith told The PIE News.

“As part of my role as international education champion, the week will help to showcase the excellence of the UK’s education sector and will involve a number of interesting panels, including the higher education panel which I am chairing.”

Also being held at the UK Pavilion is Heriot Watt University’s Future Skills Conference; the university also scored a coveted spot as a supporting partner of the Expo.

The conference aims to address key themes encompassing purposeful education, as well as the role of education in transforming economies and addressing global challenges

“Future Skills is a whole day of events, debates and activities focused on the future of education skills,” said Lucy Everest, Global COO of the university.

“We’re really focusing on future careers and showing how education connects with the future of the world, which is obviously a really important thing for an Expo like this in terms of what does the world hold for us going forward.”

It is predicted that by 2055, half of today’s work activities could be automated

Other highlights of the DIT’s week-long stint at the Expo include panels on women in IT, teaching entrepreneurship, the role of aid in education and “meeting the needs of every child”.

“It is predicted that by 2055, half of today’s work activities could be automated… it is crucial that education adapts for a future we can only imagine, including preparing our children for jobs that don’t yet exist,” organisers said.

The week will allow industry leaders and academics to “unite” to “investigate” how best the education sector can prepare and develop tools to adapt for the future.

“I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss collaboration with key government education ministers from priority markets in person as well,” Smith added.

Expo 2020 Dubai is said to see millions of visitors from 192 countries participating over the course of the six months. The Expo finishes on March 31, 2022.
