Published 26/03/2018

ELT industry numbers show a healthy growth on sunny Malta after a slight decrease in 2015, latest National Statistics Office Malta numbers reveal.

Student numbers are up 13.6% since 2016, with some markets showing a double-digit growth

Italy, the top source market for Maltese ELT, grew by 36% since 2016. In second position, Germany shows a slight 5% decrease, while Russian student numbers are growing again after a steep decrease, that halved its numbers between 2014 and 2016. Brazil sent 1,898 more students than in 2016, showing a 72% growth.

July is by far the most popular month – it is also the month with the highest proportion of students per tourist.

As observed in other markets, young learners are taking up a larger share of the ELT sector: numbers of students aged 15 and under show a 63% increase since 2014, while the number of 18-25 year olds shows a 14% decrease over the same period.

July is by far the most popular month – it is also the month with the highest proportion of students per tourist.

But while July’s figures dwarfed other months in 2017 – the number of students who arrived in July was more than double compared to other months such as August – the distribution of arrivals used to look more evenly distributed in 2014 and 2015.
