Maltese English-language provider EC English Language Centres and Japan’s Kindai High School have celebrated 15 years of partnership  – with the president of Malta lending her hand to make it a memorable anniversary.

Over 700 Japanese Kindai students have visited Malta to learn English since the two educators agreed to work together in 2003.

Students visited president Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca at San Anton Palace, where she gave a tour of the staterooms and accepted a €1,500 cheque for The President’s Trust from EC, Chiswick House, St Martin’s College, Kindai, and Nexsis Japan.

“Malta has become well regarded internationally for its expertise in international and English language education”

Qrendi Local Council organised a tree planting ceremony, attended by the Maltese minister for the environment, sustainable development and climate change, José Herrera.

The initiative, part of EC’s Giving Back program, has seen Kindai students plant 200 trees over the past five years.

“As a result of the successful relationship between EC and Kindai High School, we now have a number of student ambassadors for Malta who can spread the word about the beauty of the Maltese landscape and what we are doing here to protect and preserve our environment,” Herrera said.

Students also attended a cultural integration class at EC’s sister campus at St Martin’s College, where they were joined by André Spiteri, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Japan.

“Over these last years, Malta has become well regarded internationally for its expertise in international and English language education with an ever-increasing number of students from various countries, including Japan,” Spiteri said.

He added that Malta has benefited from the social, cultural and economic contributions that international education has made to the nation’s development.

“And just as importantly, it has served to consolidate the friendly relations with Japan thanks to Kindai High School visits undertaken during these past 15 years,” he added.

In 2017, the number of Japanese nationals visiting Malta to study English rose to 2,924 from 2,394 in 2016.

Earlier in 2018, EC opened a school in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
