What is BUILA?

BUILA is a membership-led organisation for staff in HEIs who are concerned with international work - primarily the recruitment of international (ie. Non-EU) students on programmes of higher study in the UK . Members meet in regional groupings and pass concerns and issues through to an elected Executive. Members of the Executive have built up effective channels of communication with key agencies and organisations including The British Council/ECS, UCAS, UKCOSA, NARIC/ECCTIS, Universities UK, Hotcourses and DJG Freight.

Institutions that are in UUK, SCOP or the Scottish equivalent organisations are eligible to join BUILA. Institutions interested in becoming members should contact the BUILA Secretary for further information.

BUILA has a mailbase, run by JISCMAIL, which is for members only, where particular concerns and requests for help or information are raised and discussed and important news is circulated across the network. Any staff working for member institutions may join the mailbase; currently there are 125 HEIs in membership with 382 individuals subscribing to the mailbase. The mailbase is therefore closed to staff who belong to a member institution.  Correspondence to the mailbase, especially where personal opinion is being expressed, should be treated as being given in strict confidence.
